Two Essential Principles
There are two essential principles of
success. Well, yes, there are more than two but
these two belong at the top of the list ...
1. The Golden Rule
Do unto
others as you would have others do unto you!
The
world has changed and it is continuing to change at an
accelerating rate. What were once considered to be
common politeness and courteous behavior today are
anachronisms. In this era of instant gratification
and "it is all about me", those among us who stick to
our traditional values stand out like a giraffe wearing
a bow-tie.
The World is a crowded place. It isn't going to be
any less crowded in our lifetimes. Doing unto
others as you would have others do unto you may seem
like an outdated idea but it is one that is still
appreciated. You may at times feel like only the
bad guys and the selfish get ahead while the good guys
fall further behind. Sometimes, it isn't just that
you feel that way, that's the way it really is.
Some people are takers and some people are givers.
Most are somewhere in the middle. Societies are
only able to exist on the honor system. Most
people recognize that if everyone were to take more than
they give, society would eventually collapse. At
the same time, people feel threatened in an increasingly
intolerant and hostile World. Many people do not
start the day intending to take more than they give but
they are so wrapped up in their own circumstances that
they end up taking more than they give. They do
not think to make the extra effort to try to make
someone else's life a little better.
Always try to put yourself in the other persons shoes in
all your interactions with others. It isn't always
easy; after all, we are only human. Make a
conscious effort to make the Golden Rule part of your
daily life and you will see - and feel - a
difference within yourself and your business. I
can promise you that!
2. Persistence
"Nothing in the World can take the place
of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more
common in the World than unsuccessful men with talent.
Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb.
Education will not; the World is full of educated
derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are
omnipotent. The slogan 'Press on' has solved and
always will solve the problems of the human race."
~ President Calvin Coolidge
I have
President Coolidge's quote on the wall next to my desk.
I have looked at it every day for more than 25 years.
It is a constant reminder to me that while success may
come by accident for some people, most of us have to
work at it. I know I do. We all get tired or
discouraged at times. The difference between a
true entrepreneur and a wage earner is that a true
entrepreneur never gives up. He cannot give up.
It is not in his make-up to quit.
There are times in business when we
feel like a sardine or a salmon, always swimming against
the current, hoping that a bear doesn't come along and
eat us - but, we never stop swimming.
